Work Life at Morton Bahamas Limited
The work environment of the company is vital to the day-to-day operations of Morton Bahamas Limited. Two aspects of the work environment at the Morton Bahamas Limited that is fundamental to the success of the company’s operation includes the traits and practices of the managerial stuff and training of all employees. Both of the interviewee indicated that during their early days at the company there were foreign managers. However, Mr. Farquharson noted that it was during the late 1960s and early 1970s many of the foreign mangers began to return to the United Sates. It also during this time that The Bahamas was experiencing the movement of Blacks led by the Progressive Liberal Party to gain Majority Rule. Therefore, the owners of the company seconded him to administrative office on a part time bases. It was later after 1973 when The Bahamas gain independence and the establishment of the National Insurance Board that the company appointed him to become general manager to conduct all communications between the company and government. “They really used me liaison between the company and the government because I use to work with them in Nassau before. So I understood them and they understood me.” Moreover, such upward mobility of Bahamians in managerial positions at the company is unique trend of the company. Since, the retirement of Mr. Farquharson in 1998, there has been three Bahamian general managers of the company namely, Mr. Geon Turnquest, Mr. Glenn Bannister and currently Mr. Charles Farquharson.
