Community Contributions
Infrastructural development
In addition, to employing sixty percent of the island’s population, Morton Bahamas Limited provides many community activities to assist the needs of residents. Morton Bahamas Limited has been a tremendous contributor to the infrastructural development of the island in providing electricity, water and sponsorship to the school and other community organization.
Mr. Farquharson mentioned that one power plant was out to the lake for the salt company and the other plant was in town for the residents. There were no water facilities Inagua. Many residents built underground tanks generated by pumped to store water. Morton Bahamas Limited would then barge water from the United States on the Cecile Erickson. A water truck using a high power horse would drive around to residents’ home and fill their tanks. Inagua was one of the first family islands with a good infrastructure,” he added. In addition, Mrs. Farquharson mentioned that, “The Company was supplying the community with electricity for years. It was not until recently like in 2010 that the company sold the electrical plant that supply the community to Bahamas Electricity Corporation. Many people would argue that there was less problems in terms of power outage when the plant was operated by Morton.”
Education
Education has been enhanced on the island through the company’s efforts. Many years ago the company outfitted the home economics and sciences classrooms with equipment. The company annually donates computers to the school’s computer lab. In addition, each Christmas, the company donates gifts to the kids and partner with the school to host a Christmas party. Mrs. Farquharson also mentioned that the Company recently donated a playground to the Preschool and annually supplies the Preschool with material. She joyfully added that “Wherever there a need, whenever we can, we give back because these are our future employees and we treat them that way.
