Production is the most fundamental aspect of the salt company because the level production plays a major role in the level of sales and profits of the company. In that, ‘how much salt you is make is how much salt you sell’. Therefore, production is very important. The salt making process is done by solar evaporation. “In simple terms is like if you get a cup of salt water from the ocean, allow it to be in the sun all day, by the end of the day the water will have evaporated and you will be left with salt crystals in your cup. However, we did this on a larger sale.” |
In another light, Michael Carton and Gail Saunders in their book Islanders in the stream suggested that during the early years of the salt industry salt was produced on many of the southern islands such as Ragged Island, Exuma and Long Island and even the Turks & Caicos. Therefore, what makes salt production so unique to the island Inagua and how was it able to sustain itself over the past decades? Mrs. Farquharson expressed that a solar evaporation salt requires perfect weather conditions. Excessive amount of rain has a major negative impact on the salt production because it dilutes the brine in the salt pans. Therefore, Inagua’s climate is mainly hot and dry with very little rain. In addition the island is very flat which allows for perfect flow of salt water through the reservoir system.
Proper maintenance of the machinery equipment is also important in salt production because the salt water and salt provide serious rust damage to equipment. Mr. Farquharson also mentioned that during his time as general manger he launched an extensive maintenance program that ensure that equipment was protected and new equipment was made on the regular bases.
Morton Bahamas Limited has always seen an increase in production. During the 1960s the company produced and estimate of 600,000 tons of salt annually. However, near the end of his retirement the company had made 1.3 millions of tons of salt annually. Today, the company continues to 1.3 millions of tons salt annually and on daily basis 10,000 to 15,000 tons of salt.
